Anti-Freeze

Antifreeze is a needed item for any automobile or fleet owner. It is vital to their vehicle’s performance and also to their safety. The product itself is usually yellow, red, or orange in color due to the coloring agents that are put into the mixture when being manufactured per OEM requirements.

The application of antifreeze in an automobile can help with the lubrication of moving parts within an engine when used correctly as well as to prevent the freezing of fluids when used during low temperatures. The most common fluids used are ethylene glycol-based for longer drain intervals resulting in.

Color

Color indicates the type of technology in the system. Regardless of coolant type, it should not be brown or black. The TMC has issued a recommended practice (RP351) which categorizes coolant colors: (See above – COLORS.) Mixing different coolant technologies is generally not recommended as it may dilute or destabilize the inhibitor package and reduce corrosion protection or cause deposits.

Clarity

Indicates corrosion may be occurring. Aluminum can be corroded above pH 11, producing a strong ammonia smell. A pH below 7 indicates an acidic condition exists. Use a pH test strip to detect potential problems. The reading should be between 7.0 and 11.5, depending on the type of coolant used. If outside of that pH range, perform a complete drain, flush (preferably with a cleaner) and refill with a quality coolant.

Odor

Indicates high pH – ammonia state above 11.0 destroys soft metals – below 7 indicate acidic. Use a pH tester if possible. If the sample or system smells of ammonia, Drain, Clean, Flush and Refill. You can use a pH test strip to test. The reading should be between 7.0 and 11.0.

Freeze Point

Freeze point is a good measure of the coolant concentration. Acceptable blends of 40% to 60% antifreeze in water will give freeze protection from -12°F to -65°F. Check freeze point with a refractometer (Old World part # FXATK2) and a glycol adjustment chart.

Protection

Measure protection for Fully Formulated coolant (e.g., FLEET CHARGE®), with an SCA test strip; for FINAL CHARGE® and FINAL CHARGE NOAT, use FINAL CHARGE ELC test strip (part # FXATK3).

Choose from the following heavy duty antifreeze / coolants

Fleet Charge ® – Fully Formulated Coolant

  • Fully formulated, ethylene glycol-based coolant
  • Precharged with advance technology Supplement Coolant Additives (SCAs). Because it is SCA precharged, this coolant requires no SCAs at initial fill and ensures proper chemistry at every top-off.
  • Works with ALL* heavy-duty diesel, gasoline and natural gas engine cooling systems
  • To properly check nitrite levels use a Fully Formulated test strip. If nitrite levels are below 1200 ppm, add SCA liquid additive as needed. Check service manual or vehicle operations manual for details.

Final Charge ® Global – Extended Life Coolant

  • an Extended Life Coolant (ELC)
  • an OAT, EG based coolant
  • Free of Nitrite, Silicate, Phosphate and 2-Ethylhexonic Acid (2-EH)
  • Why nitrite free? In some applications, aluminum heat transfer has been known to chemically react with Nitrited coolants. FINAL CHARGE GLOBAL will protect liners from pitting, keep the cooling system clean and maintain all components in a cooling system.
  • Compatible with all HD Extended Life Coolants and is the same in color – red
  • Meets the specifications of Cummins (CES-14603 & CES-14439), Caterpillar (EC-1) Detroit Diesel and Volvo/Mack
  • Designed to be operated for 1,000,000 miles, 8 years, 20,000 hours without the use of any inhibitors if properly maintained
  • FINAL CHARGE GLOBAL is one of a very few coolants that meets Cummins highest Standard Specifications CES-14603.
  • uses OAT inhibitors to provide guaranteed protection for all cooling system metals.
  • Backwards compatible with all heavy-duty and automotive coolants
